Telling Stories

Name That Food

February13

What, my friends, is this?

Well, I know it’s a lunch from the Greenville High School cafeteria back in 2000, when I was a senior, but what is it? Pizza, maybe, but what’s the half a hamburger bun about?  And who eats tater tots with pizza?  (Okay, some high school students…)  But if it is pizza, what’s it topped with?  Rabbit turds?

I polled a few friends and got these suggestions (arranged from least to most likely):

- tomato pie (badly burned)

- something involving tomato puree

- open-faced sandwich with black beans

- barbecue chicken

- barbecue barf

- out of control Sloppy Joe

- chili mac

- lasagna

- roadkill

- an alien from one of the old Star Trek episodes

- Scrounge-Up-Your-Cash-and-Head-Across-the-Street-to-the-Valero Lunch

What do you think?  GHS alumni, I’m counting on y’all to identify this!

Or maybe the real question is:

How did we ever make it out of there alive?

I got in!!! I LOVED this post! Food like this is why I always brought a peanut butter sandwich to school every day of my life :) !

I’m kind of leaning toward barbecue chicken.

Whatever the case, I probably shoved this crap into my mouth at some point. ‘Tis why I’m in no way picky today.

Maybe you went to a high dollar high school and it’s CAVIAR!!!(did I even spell that right?)…This is why I only ate caf. food when I HAD to eat it!

Haha! No, GHS was definitely not a high-dollar school.

I see there’s almost one pack of ketchup for every two tater tots. So… maybe the mystery food needed to be camoflaged in ketchup before it was edible. LOL, who suggested an “open-faced sandwich with black beans“? Even school cafeterias have to draw the line somewhere.

How about fish filets with capers and tomato sauce?

I also note that you needed two forks and no knife to eat it. It gets stranger and stranger.

And what is that funny red and black thingy next to the cup of coke? A garnish? A carnation? LOL

    French toast with raisins?

Oh, the thing on the tray is a lion head for the Greenville Lions. The pic is totally upside down because I’m inept like that.

I hadn’t noticed the two forks, lol. That makes me think the bun was part of someone else’s lunch after all.

Hey, Lisa…my first thought was “Pomegranate Surprise.” ;-)

ROFLOL You know, it’s probably possum…

I saw an opossum last night.

Storytelling is second nature to me. When I was three, I told stories about Rainbow Brite. Now I’m quite a bit older than three, and I tell stories about people I make up. And about people I don’t make up. And especially about myself and my (mis)adventures as a writer, wife, mommy, and Walmart shopper. Because life is just a collection of stories. Sometimes, it’s far stranger than fiction…
