Telling Stories

About LR

August22

Formerly a small town gal, LR resides in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex with her computer genius husband, their bouncing baby boy (known here as the Burt Squirt), and the obligatory standoffish cat named Dorian Gray (more commonly called Dorrie).

When not telling stories or spending time with her family, LR can be found reading pretty much anything but the Twilight Saga, singing with the Plano Civic Chorus, traveling around the world (Walt Disney World, that is), and playing continuous games of Scrabble on Facebook (she just got an iPod Touch with the intent to become a Words with Friends addict).

LR stands for Lisa Renée, which distinguished her from the two other Lisas in her first writers’ group. But where there are writers, there are editors, and it didn’t take long for Lisa Renée to get shortened to LR. The pen name stuck, though perhaps less for the initial reasons of economy than because all the cool authors do it.

A 2004 alumna of Baylor University, LR graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English literature. Her studies included courses in creative writing, screenwriting, and writing for the popular market. LR writes with a distinctively Texan voice (occasionally hijacking such words as uffda from her Minnesotan husband’s vocabulary), drawing inspiration from the rural landscape of her childhood and the charms and foibles of the people who live there, with a special interest in the ones who seem not to quite belong.

Storytelling is second nature to me. When I was three, I told stories about Rainbow Brite. Now I’m quite a bit older than three, and I tell stories about people I make up. And about people I don’t make up. And especially about myself and my (mis)adventures as a writer, wife, mommy, and Walmart shopper. Because life is just a collection of stories. Sometimes, it’s far stranger than fiction…
