LR and Mr. Burt have done more to improve their house in the past week than they have in the past year. It all started last Sunday night, when the search on Craigslist for a Nintendo Wii led to a whim to look for dining room furniture turned up the perfect set, never used and on sale for $425, which was just too good for them to pass up.

Six chairs fit the Burts’ dining space so much better than the old breakfast table for four, and the leaf will let us seat eight if we should ever become social enough (and LR daring enough in the kitchen) to invite that many people over.

The chair in the foreground has become Dorrie’s new favorite napping spot. (It would be the correct chair for the Lady of the House.)

The wood and glass overlay were what won the Burts over; it matches the door of their entertainment center in the adjoining living room.
Though they weren’t planning on buying any more furniture for a while, a quick stop in Office Depot Friday night on the way to Lowe’s brought a much-needed new desk for Mr. Burt, who’d been working at his old dorm desk ever since, well, dorm days.

Or rather, Mr. Burt hadn’t been working at his old dorm desk so much gaming at it.
Only there wasn’t much time for gaming this weekend, as LR had Mr. Burt busy doing things like standing on extension ladders in cramped stairwells hanging light fixtures.

And painting the ceiling and walls of the guest room Dorrie’s bedroom.

LR had been meaning to paint the walls teal since she purchased a brown and teal bedding set two years ago, but never got around to it. The recent water damage to the ceiling (and an impending visit from her mother-in-law!) motivated her to finally do it.

One really funny thing happened Sunday when the Burts were cleaning up. The city of Carrollton offers curbside pickup for large waste disposal. Since Mr. Burt’s old desk and chair were utter crap that wouldn’t even sell on Craigslist, he and LR put them out on the curb. Not five minutes after LR had wheeled the chair out, went back in for the huge box the desk came in, and got outside again with it, the chair was gone! If only whoever took it had waited around, they could have had a desk to go with their chair. But maybe they came back, because by the time LR and Mr. Burt finished their pizza supper, the desk was gone, too.

I love it!! The table is beautiful!!! It’s great that you guys have “new” stuff to enjoy! Love the story of the desk and chair being gone!!

Thanks, Karen! I think I like the table even more because of the deal we got — and that light fixture (along with a few others and a fan) were FREE; we used credit card points for Home Depot gift cards and spent the gift cards on the downstairs lighting. I just love getting stuff for good deals!
Isn’t that such a hoot about the desk and chair? I died laughing when the chair was gone in five minutes. Once I put an old chair of mine out on the curb, and a neighbor kid came by and asked if he could have it to roll down the street in, since we have a nice hill. I wonder if it was the same kid.
